Changing the power settings to max helping a particular laptop that had this issue........
A recent discovery determined that FireFox was causing much of the disk usage issues. I solved some of this by changing settings in Firefox.

about:config
Enter about:config into the firefox address bar (confirm the info message in case it shows up) & search for the preference named accessibility.force_disabled. double-click it, change its value to 1 and restart firefox once.
